A Couple of Relaxing Days

It’s Saturday morning and another beautiful day in paradise. Peter is in the pool doing his laps and I’m hanging out in a lounge chair listening to the waves crash on the beach. Yesterday we did absolutely nothing except sit by/in the pool. We even had lunch by the pool. It was wonderful. We plan to do the same this morning but then head out of the resort this afternoon. We’re not going to do anything special, just walk down a few blocks to check out the neighborhood.

Yesterday there were four weddings at the resort. Here’s a short clip of the one that took place in the gazebo near the pools. It was taken from the balcony of our room so it’s everyone is a bit small but it was fun to watch it all unfold.

The second wedding was on the Dreams side of the resort and looked very festive with balloons decorating the site. You can it if you look in the top right corner of the video.

The third one was a same sex couple who had quite the party. Not only was there a sit down dinner but music and dancing as well. Then at about 10:30 we heard fireworks and watched from our balcony.

I don’t know where the 4th wedding was held, maybe someplace inside as we didn’t see anything else on the patios.

Since we didn’t do much yesterday to report on, here’s a little info about the resort. There are actually two resorts here, Secrets and Dreams. We’re on the Secrets side which is adults only (yeah!) while the Dreams side allows children. Between the two resorts there are about 10 restaurants/cafes and too many bars to count. We’ve gone to the Dreams side a few times for dinner and on Thursday night for the Mexican dinner/show. But for the most part we’ve hung out on our side. Here are several pics to show you the resort.

Our room is the one circled.
One of the 3 pools and 2 hot tubs on our side. There are 4 more pools on the Dreams side. There’s a grill in the background on the left and a bar on the right behind the umbrellas.
Hot tub and another pool with in water lounge chairs.
The third pool has a swim up bar. This one is very popular.
If I want to pay $200 for a massage (I don’t) I can get one on the beach.
Beach volley ball is in the afternoon led by a staff member. There is also water aerobics several days a week. I went yesterday and, even though it wasn’t too rigorous, it was fun.
There are several palapas in the sand but we prefer the pool. The sand isn’t so much sand as it is tiny rocks and not very comfortable on bare feet. Besides, I hate being dirty.

As I said there are about 10 restaurants/cafes between the two resorts. We can pick from Italian, French, Mexican, Asian, Seafood as well as 2 buffet style restaurants and a couple of small cafes. Since this is all-inclusive we can go to whichever one we want. The good news is that the people on the Dreams side can’t come to the restaurants on the Secrets side….yeah! No screaming, running kids at meal times.

I’m working my way through the drink menu and found a couple of new favorites yesterday…a mini beer and a Blue Hawaii. The mini-beer is a combination of Licor 43 (a Spanish Vanilla Liqueur) and heavy cream. It is sweet, which I love, and absolutely delicious. The Blue Hawaii is rum, vodka, blue curacao, pineapple juice and sweet and sour. I’ve never had one before and it was quite yummy. Yesterday I saw someone with a Miami Vice that looked pretty good. I may have to try that today. Neither Peter nor I drink much so even just the 2 drinks/day we’ve been having is a lot for us. We’re going to need to detoxify our livers when we get home.

There has been a cruise ship here since we arrived and it’s just sitting out there. We got fairly close Thursday on our day trip and saw that it was the Westerdam from Holland America. I looked it up and it’s due back in LA on the 14th but it hasn’t budged since we’ve been here. We wonder if they had a Covid outbreak and are quarantining off shore. Can’t find anything about it online but hopefully everyone is OK.

Holland America’s Westerdam hanging off shore.

Well, not much else to report. Peter just finished his laps so we’ll head in for breakfast. Have a great day everyone. Love from Mexico.

Day Trip to Yelapa and Majahuitas

Nighttime at the pool
Majestic Princess sailing into the sunset on Wednesday 11/3

I didn’t post yesterday as we had had a very long day and I was too tired. So, it’s now Friday morning and I’m sitting by the pool waiting for Peter to finish his laps before heading to breakfast.

Yesterday we took a day trip to Yelapa & Majahuitas with the Vallarta Adventure tour group. It’s the group recommended by the resort and it was very well done. We took a cab to the Maritime Harbor which was very crowded with people leaving for day trips. At about 8:30 we finally boarded our catamaran for our all-day excursion.

Waiting for our catamaran. No I haven’t grown a beard….it’s my mask.
It was another beautiful day.

On our way to the village of Yelapa we passed the Los Arcos de Mismaloya National Marine Park which is a group of beautiful granite islands and islets just south of PV. In 1975 they were declared a Refuge Area for the Protection of Marine Flora and Fauna.

At the Arch in the National Park.

Our first stop of the day was a short distance from the National Park and a popular snorkel spot. Luckily our group was the only one there so it wasn’t too crowded. We spent about 30 minutes snorkeling but weren’t terribly impressed. The water was very refreshing but the snorkeling itself wasn’t much. The water was a little murky and there weren’t many fish. I guess we’re getting a bit jaded as we’ve had several beautiful snorkeling experiences (Maui on our honeymoon and Key West in particular) but it was still fun.

The tour had several professional photographers and one followed us into the water.

Our next stop was the tiny fishing village of Yelapa. There are no roads in/out of the village so it was developed with materials brought in by sea. One option here was to hike up to the waterfall and the other was to hang out on the beach for 2 hours. Guess which one we chose??

Village of Yalapa

Hanging on the beach in Yalapa waiting for the waterfall group to get back.
Some people paid $5.00 for the privilege of putting this giant iguana on their shoulder and getting their picture taken. It should come as no surprise that we took a pass.

After lunch (and an open bar) on the boat, we headed to our third stop, the village of Majahuitas. This is where we could paddle board, kayak or take a ride on a banana boat. Since it hurts my knees watching people kneel on a paddle board went for a short ride in a kayak. They only had 4 kayaks available and there were quite a few people waiting so we only went out for about 10-15 minutes. We spent about 20 minutes hanging out in the big beach chairs until I went out on the banana boat. I had never done that before and began to question the wisdom of doing it when I realized I was going out with 11 drunk 30 somethings. The good news was that when I fell into the boat during the ride (which I guess is better than falling out of the boat), the guy behind me was strong enough to lift me back on to the seat. It was fun and something I can now check off my list of things to do.

On our way back to Puerto Vallarta, some of the crew put on a rock concert for us. It was quite the hoot. Pablo (aka Jagger) was the cruise director. He was very enthusiastic and a lot of fun.

We chatted with some very nice people on our excursion including one guy who is the spitting image of former Cubs pitcher Jake Arrieta. He told me that he gets that a lot.

Tell me that’s not Jake Arrieta.

Once back at the resort cleaned up and rested before our evening Mexican Dinner Show. It was at the adjacent Dreams resort and was very nice. The show highlighted dances from 4 different Mexican states. This one is a dance from Jalisco, which is were Puerto Vallarta is located. The dancers were very good. https://youtu.be/kGj44NTljp4.

It was a very full, fun day. Today we plan to just hang out at the pool and maybe take a walk along the beach so I may not report back in until tomorrow. Have a great day everyone. Love from us.

A Trip Into Town

Sail boat and the sunset on Tuesday night.

This morning after our buffet breakfast, we hopped into a cab and headed to the “boardwalk” of Puerto Vallarta. It was only about 10 minutes from the resort and is lined on one side by the ocean and the other by a million shops. We skipped most of the shops except to look for a pair of dressy sandals for me. No luck. 🙁

The Princess cruise ship Majestic Princess pulled into port this morning so the streets were jammed with visitors from the ship. But unlike some places, there was enough space to spread them out. In 2016 we visited Kotor, Montenegro as a day trip from Dubrovnik and were in a very small Old Town area with thousands of passengers from 3 large ships. It was so jammed we could barely move and left after just a couple of hours. Today there were lots of tourists but we still had room to move around.

Majestic Princess arriving about 7:30 this morning.

Apparently this week is the Day of the Dead celebration so we saw lots of sculptures and statues of skulls. Not being fans of skulls, we took a pass on buying anything but we took a few nice pics.

This was the tallest one on the boardwalk; it’s gigantic!
This was one of about 10 large skulls we found on our walk.

Near the end of the boardwalk we saw a group of young street entertainers. Here’s a link to YouTube video I took. https://youtu.be/84-8EwOaA6M

We also passed Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. Noon mass was going on so I only stood in the back for a few seconds.

After walking around for several hours we headed back to the resort for lunch and an afternoon by the pool. It’s now almost 6 pm and Peter still down there swimming some laps. He loves to swim but needs to go either early in the morning or later in the afternoon once the pool has cleared out a bit.

A shot of tequila anyone? This guy roams around the pool late in the afternoon with his cart full of high-end tequila. We took a pass.

I’m not sure what we’re doing for dinner tonight, either Mexican or the seafood restaurant. We’ve heard good things about both so we should be OK either way. Which ever one we don’t do tonight we’ll visit later in the week.

Tomorrow we heading off on a day trip to the other side of the bay to do some snorkeling and kayaking. It should be a ton of fun. I’ll let you know.

Puerta Vallarta Adventure

Before we get to our latest travel adventure here’s what we’ve been doing since we last posted from our September vacation.

At long last our backyard is done!!! When we got home from Colorado it was finished except for the pergola and that was installed two weeks ago so now our backyard is beautiful.

The patio looks gigantic which is great since we’ve got quite a bit of furniture out there.
Our firepit with the fountain in the background.

In early October we went to the Immersive Van Gogh exhibit in Phoenix. It was really amazing.

I continue to work on my stained glass projects. The last couple of weeks I did on a 3-sided Christmas tree.

Peter is continuing to work on his pickleball game. He’s getting better and is hoping to “graduate” out of the novice group very soon. He’s also busy working out and swimming almost every day. The golf course just opened this week after being closed for over seeding so he hasn’t gotten back to that yet.

I’ve been sidelined from all sports activities once again because my right shoulder flared up a week or so after we got back from Colorado. I had another cortisone shot a few weeks ago and an MRI yesterday (11/1). I’ll get the results of the MRI and start back to PT once we return from Mexico.

Last Friday (10/29) my girlfriend, Kathy, and I saw Renee Elise Goldsberry in concert at Symphony Hall. Peter wasn’t interested so we had a girls’ night out and we thoroughly enjoyed the concert. Renee is best known for her Tony award winning role as Angelica Schuyler in Hamilton. She has an amazing voice and sang a wide variety of pop and gospel songs. Near the end of the second act she sang this opening line, “A toast to the groom…” and the place went crazy. Anyone who knows Hamilton recognizes that as the start of what will always be her signature song, Satisfied, or as I call it…the how to win a Tony in 6 minutes song. I was surprised she sang it as it has many parts but she pulled it off beautifully. She followed that with her solo version of Schuyler Sisters. It was remarkable. Here’s a video of her singing Satisfied in Hamilton.

Finally, on Halloween Peter and I went to a party with friends from the community Democratic Club. We dressed as a flapper girl and her gangster honey. Peter has lost so much weight (he’s up to 28 pounds) that his suit was gigantic on him. It worked well for his costume but we need to get him a new suit before the holiday parties start.

Peter’s hat is stuffed with tissue paper to keep it out of his eyes.
One of the community groups sponsored a Halloween golf cart parade. Some of the carts were really amazing.

That takes us up to our current travel adventure, a week at the Secrets all-inclusive resort in Puerto Vallarta. Yesterday (Monday 11/1) we discovered that our flight time was changed from 1000 to 0730 so we decided to head into the Valley and spend the night at an airport hotel. This morning we were on the 5:30am shuttle for the 10-minute trip to the airport. That was much better than leaving the house at 4:30 for the hour long drive to the airport.

After an uneventful flight (the only kind I want to have) and an easy trip through immigrations and customs, we found our private shuttle to the resort. It was only noon and our room wasn’t ready so we headed to the pool for some sun, swim, lunch, and of course, Pina Coladas. Now in our room, which is beautiful, we’ll get settled then head out to explore the resort. Not sure what we’re going to do this week but I’m sure we’ll find something to do to stay out of trouble. I’ll keep you posted.

My first of what I’m sure will be many Pina Coladas this week.
The resort pool. Secrets is adult only so thankfully there are no kids screaming and jumping into the pool….it’s heaven.
View from our room on the 13th floor.
View of the pool area from our balcony. We should have some nice sunsets from up here.

Day 20 Home

We left our hotel in Page just after 6:30am. We stopped for breakfast in Flagstaff so it was just after noon when we pulled into the driveway. We were excited to see that our pavers are finally done. The pergola still isn’t up and the fountain should be delivered next week. The only other thing left to do is the additional plantings which should be in later this week. Here are a few pics of the new landscaping.

The garbage can enclosure with pavers along the driveway. The pavers go up the other side of the driveway as well.
Love the pavers! They covered the original concrete then extended the patio 10 more feet. The patio looks gigantic!
Firepit still needs the decorative glass on top of the lava rock.
The outdoor kitchen including Peter’s pride and joy…the Ooni pizza oven.

Once we got home it took about 2 hours to unload the car, empty the suitcases and separate the gifts we bought. After that was done (and talking with the landscaper about the plantings) we headed to the Robson Ranch Grill for lunch. We have no food in the house and I have no desire to grocery shop this afternoon. The portions are large enough so the leftovers will be dinner.

Peter went out after lunch to get the car washed….it’s filthy from the dirt roads at Chaco. As I write this I’m relaxing on the couch watching Hamilton on Disney. Peter doesn’t like the music so I didn’t listen to it in the car. With him not home I can sing as loud as I want (I know all the words to My Shot….it took a full year but I finally can sing it through).

We had a great time on our first vacation in 18 months. We put 3500 miles on our car while visiting some beautiful places in the southwest and the Rockies. We went to eight National Parks, Sites and/or Monuments. We played golf at 5 beautiful courses and met some great people. The best part, of course, was experiencing it together. Even though we have a great time here in our community there’s something special about visiting new places together. We are already looking forward to our next adventure….a week in an all-inclusive resort in Puerto Vallarta the first week of November. We’ll fill you in on those adventures as they happen.

Rocky Mountain National Park.

Till then, thanks for traveling with us and we look forward to talking with you soon. Stay safe….Lynn and Peter.

Day 19 Zion National Park

We’re so glad we made the 2-hour trip to Zion as it’s one of our favorite National Parks, second only to the Grand Canyon. On the way we passed Grand Staircase-Escalante National Historical Park. Like Vermillion Cliffs, though, we didn’t drive into the site as the roads are unimproved and filled with pot holes. There weren’t many pull-off spots for pictures but we got a couple from the car and one from the parking lot at the Visitor Center (which was closed).

From the parking lot at the Visitor Center.
Peter took this one from the passenger seat while we drove home from Zion.

Just west of Grand Staircase we saw a sign for Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park so we took a little side jaunt to check it out. The sand doesn’t look that coral/pink to me but it was still pretty.

By the time we finally made it to Zion and found a place to park (not easy; we trolled the parking lot for 15 minutes before catching a handicap spot as a car was pulling out) it was almost noon. We lost an hour going into Utah so even though we left at 7am it was still mid-day before we arrived.

There is a shuttle bus to take visitors through the park and we got off in a couple of spots for two short hikes. The first was to the Lower Emerald Pool.

Cute bridge crossing the river at the beginning of the trail.

Emerald Pool. Not much water but it was still pretty.

Here’s a short video I took at the pool.

Emerald Pool

After finishing our hike to Emerald Poool, we ate our picnic lunch on the grounds of the Zion Lodge. There were no picnic tables so we just plopped down in the shade.

Getting back up was a lot harder than getting down.

Our next hike was the Riverside Walk which is also called the Gateway to the Narrows. It was a 1.5 hour walk and we were getting tired so we only walked about a 1/2 mile before heading back to catch the shuttle.

At the start of the hike.
View from the trail.

Given that we had a 2-hour drive back to our hotel we left after our 2nd hike. Even though we got the hour back when we hit AZ, it was still 5pm before we arrived. It was a long day but we’re very glad we went. Peter said he like Zion better than Rocky Mountain NP, mainly because of the contrast between the mountains and the sky. If you remember from the pictures of RMNP, the sky was very hazy. We asked a ranger about it and he said it was smoke from the fires in the Pacific Northwest. In Zion, though, the sky was crystal clear and made for a beautiful scene.

Tomorrow (Tuesday) we head home. Originally this trip was going to be 5 weeks long and include Glacier, Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. But, we decided we didn’t want to be gone that long so we only did the first half of the trip. As much as we enjoyed our adventures, we’re glad to be heading home. It’s only a 5-hour drive so we should be back by mid-day. We can’t wait to see if the landscapers have finished our backyard renovations. We’ll let you know.

Day 18 Lake Powell

Instead of renting a kayak, we decided to spend 2 hours on a 19 foot motorboat. It was a TON OF FUN! Not only was it a beautiful day to be on the lake it was much less work than a kayak. We made it about 4 miles out into the canyons and the scenery was gorgeous. Here’s a short video.

Great driving Peter!

Timing was a bit confusing because our hotel is in AZ, which doesn’t observe DST, except in the Navajo Nation. And the marina is in Utah, which does observe DST. So when we left the hotel it was 7:30AM but when we arrived at the marina 15 minutes later it was 8:45AM. My Fitbit was on AZ time but our phones were on UT time. To make life a little easier, I set the timer on my phone for about 55 minutes so I knew when we had to turn around and head back to the marina.

After a lunch of leftover Italian food from last night (Peter a pizza and me a calzone) we headed out to play a bit of golf. It was in the low 90s so we only played 9 holes. Once again, the course was gorgeous. It’s going to be difficult to return to our desert course after playing at all the green courses during our trip.

We changed our mind (again) about the last day of our vacation. Since we’re only 2 hours from Zion National Park we decided to extend our stay here one more night and head to Zion in the morning. We were there in 2019 but only for a few hours so it will be nice to spend more time. We’ll have to deal with the whole time zone issue again but it will all come out in the wash.

Speaking of wash….I need to do laundry. Talk with you tomorrow.

Day 17 Canyon De Chelly and Lake Powell

We visited our last National Historic Site today….Canyon De Chelly. It was 2 1/2 hours from Farmington and Peter did all the driving. He did very well through the Chuska Mountains where the road became very squiggly. This is another site that no one will just run into. You have to make an effort to get there but it was worth every mile. Here are just a few of the many pics we took.

Ancient Native Americans used to live in canyon caves. Peter actually managed to spot a few of the ruins.

After spending about 2 hours driving the south rim, we headed to Page, AZ where we will spend the next couple of nights. The drive was beautiful! There weren’t any pull-offs but we managed to get a few pictures.

This was actually taken from the passenger window while Peter was driving 65 MPH….not a bad shot.

Once we checked into the hotel we took a drive to Lake Powell to see what there was to do tomorrow. The sky was getting dark so we were afraid rain was coming in but it passed right by with just a few raindrops.

Dark clouds over the dessert canyons. We had just driven from this direction.
Lake Powell.
Bridge over the dam we visited 2 weeks ago.

Tomorrow we’re going to rent a kayak for a couple of hours to see a little bit of the lake. Then we have a tee time in the afternoon. We’ll only play 9 holes but the course looks beautiful so we’re excited to play.

Since the lake tour to Rainbow Bridge Monument we wanted to take only runs on Saturday and Tuesday, we decided to leave on Monday so we’ll be home a day sooner than we planned. We’ve had a great time but we’ll be glad to get home. Anyhoo….I’ll let you know how the kayaking goes. Night everyone.

Day 16 Chaco Culture and Aztec Ruins National Historical Sites

We only had a 3 1/2 hour drive from our Taos hotel to our Farmington hotel so we decided to take side trips to a couple of historical sites. Our first stop was Chaco Culture National Historical Site which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was about 3 1/2 hours from Taos but in a different direction than if we had gone from hotel to hotel.

On the way we stopped at the beautiful Lake Abiquiu. It was a state park so we couldn’t access the lake without paying a fee but we found a pretty overlook.

Lake Abiquiu

It was an uneventful drive to Chaco until we got about 12 miles away when we ran out of paved road. The first half of those last miles was unimproved but relatively smooth and pot-hole free. The last 6 miles was another story. Peter grit his teeth for the next 15 minutes as I dodged bomb-sized holes. We finally made it to the site and were glad we made the trip. The site has the most expansive ancient ruins north of Mexico. The most impressive building was Pueblo Bonita. In it’s time it was the Great House where groups gathered for meetings, ceremonies, etc. It was pretty impressive.

Part of Pueblo Bonita.
From the outside. It looks small here but it goes on forever.
Fajada Butte

The bad news was that after we finished touring the ruins, we had to go back the way we came to get to our next stop. This time Peter insisted on driving. I leave it to your imagination how long it took to get back to the main highway. Anyway, we finally made it to Aztec Ruins National Historical Site, about 90 minutes north of Chaco. As challenging as it was to get to Chaco, it was super simple to get to Aztec as it’s right in the town of Aztec NM. The site was much smaller but still quite nice.

The ruins were basically identical to Chaco as it was built by the same Pueblo tribes that build Chaco. At this site we saw a reconstructed Kiva, which is a room used for meetings and ceremonial rites.

Outside the Kiva. The building was quite large.
Inside the Kiva.

We had the chance to walk through some of the rooms of the other buildings.

Peter coming through the door of one of the buildings.

After about an hour at Aztec, we headed to our hotel in Farmington, only about 25 minutes away. Tomorrow we head back into AZ, going a bit out of our way to visit Canyon De Chelly (pronounced D’Shay) before settling into our Home2Suites in Page for our last 3 nights on the road. Not sure what we’ll do at Lake Powell (other than laundry) but I’m sure we’ll find something to keep us busy.

Day 15 Taos NM

It was a 5-hour drive from Ft. Collins to our first stop….Capulin Volcano National Monument in New Mexico. We’ve tried to get there on our trip in 2019 but it was too far out of the way. Since we don’t plan to be anywhere near there in the future we decided to make the trek a little out of our way. The volcano last erupted about 60,000 years ago so we felt pretty safe driving to the rim. The rim walk was only about a mile but the climb was quite steep so we took a pass.

The volcano is in the background.

After lunch at one of the picnic spots, we headed west to Taos. Once we hit the mountains it was a beautiful drive. There weren’t many pull outs to take pictures but we found a couple of good spots.

Cimarron Canyon
Eagle Nest Lake

It was 5pm before we pulled into our hotel in Taos but we had time for a little window shopping before dinner. The town is super cute with many adobe style buildings. We had a delicious dinner at Azteca Mexican Grill, then walked off the food in the historic area. The weather was perfect so it was a great walk.

We spent over 7 hours in the car today but we still managed to get almost 7500 steps so that’s not too bad. Tomorrow we’ll spend the night in Farmington NM which is less than 4 hours from Taos but we plan to make a couple of stops along the way. It should be fun. We’ll let you know.
